Okay, I decided to homeschool? What am I supposed to teach and when am I supposed to teach it?
BASICS FOR GETTING STARTED—WHAT TO TEACH AND WHEN TO TEACH IT
KINDERGARTEN —there is no mandatory attendance requirement for Kindergarten in California. If you conduct kindergarten instruction, you might want to find some supplemental curriculum at this grade level at your local educational supply store. GW School Supply is Fresno’s largest educational supply store. You could easily piece-mill a course of study for your kindergartener ephasizing math and language arts, filling in with a lot of reading. My motto is read to your child, read to your child, read to your child!! Most of all, make the year a fun-filled bridge to first grade!

These text inserts in the table below are taken directly from California Education Code. Under code 51210 you are to OFFER instruction in the following areas of study. As you reach each section below note how general each section is; allowing much teacher (parental) autonomy each year as to what and when it is taught. Using a purchased grade-level curriculum from one of the main publishers such as Abeka or Bob Jones Press will most likely surpass what is generally taught in California public schools. This Administrator’s advice is to carefully choose a math and language program for each grade level to assure all concepts are being covered thoroughly. All other subjects could be covered using non-traditional ways such as unit studies, library books, etc.
Ed Code 48222 “be taught in the English language and shall offer instruction in the several branches of study required to be taught in the public schools of the state.” Ed Code 51210 “The adopted course of study for grades 1 to 6, inclusive, shall include instruction, beginning in grade 1 and continuing through grade 6, in the following areas of study:

*Physical education requirements: you are to offer PE but are not under the same time requirements as shown in the code above. If you wanted to mimic the public schools, I have linked to an activity log but keeping the minute requirement is optional for the homeschooling parent. HERE IS A PE ACTIVITY LOG you are welcome to use for each student.
Here are some helpful ideas:
Homeschooler’s daily walking log Fun Ideas for Homeschool PE article Daily laps in a swimming pool for 20 minutes. Basketball training, practice and game playing. Organized or unorganized team sports through your area homeschool groups. Joining CHEFA and participating on Saturday 2-hour sports days will satisfy all your 20 minute sessions.
You may modify the log to fit a variety of activities for your children. |
